Starting School

At Flanshaw Road School we believe it is really important that we know about your child, so we can make sure they have the best possible start at our school. This section of the website includes information on; preparing your child intellectually, emotionally, physically, practicalities and attitudes, survival strategies for a stress free start, settling in, enrolment information, explaining a powhiri, the school map and a map of the school zoning area.

Communications

We believe communication between home and school is extremely important. We encourage parents to contact teachers or staff with any concerns or queries. If you are new to our community we have parents who are part of our ‘Friends of Flanshaw’ organization who are more than willing to take time to have a coffee and make sure you have all the information you need. Teachers are also more than happy to meet with you, either before or after school. We ask that you make a time to meet with them, just in case they have prior commitments to attend.

History

Flanshaw opened in February 1964 with 350 pupils and by the end of the year the roll was already 525.At this stage, Flanshaw was a full primary catering also for Intermediate aged students. The roll grew very rapidly reaching its peak in 1967 with 783 pupils and 23 teachers in 8 classrooms of up to 44 pupils in each. Prefabs were placed in all the available spaces. Towards the end of the second term of 1967, the two Intermediate classes were transferred to Rangeview Intermediate School, which was in the process of being built to relieve the growth, even though the school didn’t officially open until February 1968.
