Kapa Haka

Kapa Haka is an integral part of the Flanshaw Road School culture.

Begun in 1989, the Flanshaw Road School Kapa Haka Group in any given year has over 100 members, from Year 1 to Year 6. Students meet for one hour on a weekly basis and learn about many aspects of Maori tradition, culture and language from a team of teachers and parents. Those students with passion and talent for Kapa Haka are invited to join the Kapa Haka Performance Group. This group lead Whole-School Powhiris held each term and participate in a range of events in the wider community.

A highlight of the school year is the Maori Kapa Haka and Cultural Group Concerts, held in Term 2. We welcome parental support and involvement. A special ‘Te Whanau Awhiawhi Award’ (displayed in the Office area), was donated by the founder of the Flanshaw Kapa Haka Group, Whaea Diane Hobby, and is awarded each year to the family who have supported our Kapa Haka students with ‘whatumanawa’ (passion) and ‘aroha’ (love).

Parents of children wishing to join the Kapa Haka Group can obtain information from the office or their child’s teacher.
